How it runs
This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.
Both sides run at same time!!
-Coach shoots puck in corner
-Defense and player skate in defensive zone to perform breakout
-D Pass to F, F skates towards the other end for a 1 v 1
-After D performs breakout pass, skates to opposite side, closing gap on forward and pushing to the corner.
**D shoulder check before retrieving puck in corner.
**F takes information while performing breakout, back always towards boards and feet constantly moving.
Coach Steve's take
Watch the defender’s shoulder check before he picks up the puck. It is a small habit, but it changes everything: he sees the pressure before he acts. Ask for it on every rep until it becomes automatic. For the forward, remind him to keep his feet moving: a moving target is easier to find. If the breakout is good, the 1-on-1 takes care of itself.
