How it runs
This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.
Split the group as shown, with players on both sides of the red line. Mix forwards and defense together. Place two players in each zone ready to start. Both sides go at the same time.
On the coach's signal, two players (on each side) from the neutral zone start with a puck and pass to the coach. They skate around the coach with speed. Coach gives a return pass to one of the two players.
Meanwhile, two players in the zone close the gap on the two attackers. This creates a 2-on-2 in the zone.
On the double whistle, two new players from the neutral zone start the next sequence. The defenders leave the play. The two attackers now become the new defenders. They quickly close the gap on the next offensive pair.
Coach Steve's take
This drill lives on its tempo. If the rotations drag, you lose what makes it good: entry speed and the defenders’ quick read. Set your groups before you start and keep your double whistle crisp. Ask defenders to close the gap with their feet, not just their stick. Eight reps at full speed beat fifteen at half pace.
