How it runs
This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.
Goalie starts in the center of the crease, lined up with the middle of the net.
Quick start to cone #1 in ready position. Complete stop at the cone. Transition backwards to the center of the net.
Repeat the same pattern to cone #2, then to cone #3.
Do the drill two times, then switch goalies.
1. Stick stays on the ice from start to finish.
2. Glove and blocker out front in standard position. Correct as needed.
3. Goalie must stay ready to make a save at all times.
4. At each cone, stop with one skate. Keep the other pad facing forward, ready to make a save. Use a C-cut transition.
5. At the net, stop with one skate. Keep the other pad facing forward, ready to make a save.
Coach Steve's take
Goalies are often forgotten in practice. This drill gives them real skating work, built for their position. Watch the stick: if it leaves the ice, you see it right away. Correct it calmly, without stopping everyone. A goalie who moves well gets set sooner, and that is what makes saves.
