How it runs

This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.

Set up the defensemen in two groups. Run the same drill on both sides. For defensemen, but forwards can join.

On the whistle, the coach pushes a puck into the neutral zone. D1 quick starts to retrieve the loose puck.

D1 crosses the red line and pivots forward to backward while controlling the puck.

D1 transitions along the blue line with lateral movement. Pivot backward to forward. Carry the puck to the red line. Make a quick pass to D2.

D2 gives a quick return pass to D1. D1 takes it, enters the offensive zone, and shoots on net.

After D2 passes, he quick starts to retrieve the new puck pushed out by the coach to start the next rep.

Keep stickhandling to a minimum during the drill. Players line up behind the line.

The coach keeps the drill continuous by pushing a new puck each time.

Coach Steve's take

A defenseman who picks up a loose puck always has too much on his mind. This drill trains him to chain it together: retrieve, pivot, pass. Ask him to keep stickhandling to a minimum with his head up. Once the movement is smooth, add pressure by letting a forward come back at him. Forwards can join too: it teaches them to read defensemen.
