How it runs
This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.
Objective: Develop puck protection skills and help players recognize when to continue protecting the puck, escape pressure, or use a teammate.
Progression 1 — Repeat : In a small area, pair up the players. One player protects the puck for approximately 10 seconds while the other applies controlled pressure using their body and stick. Switch roles after each repetition.
Key Points: Keep your body between the opponent and the puck. Keep the puck away from pressure. Bend your knees and maintain a strong, balanced stance. Keep your head up to scan and gather information.
Progression 2 — Read : Create groups of three: one puck carrier, one defender, and one supporting player. The coach sends a puck along the boards. The puck carrier retrieves it under pressure and protects it. The supporting player moves to become an available passing option. The puck carrier must read the situation and recognize the right time to make the pass. The player receiving the pass then attacks the net.
Key Points: Protect the puck to create time and space. Keep your head up and identify the support option. Don't force the pass. Without the puck: move to become an available passing option.
Variation: Allow the defender to take away the passing lane, forcing the puck carrier to decide whether to pass or continue protecting the puck.
Progression 3 — Decide : Play 2-on-2 in a small area in the corner. The coach sends in a puck to start each sequence. Players must use puck protection, support, and their reads to create scoring opportunities. Play 30- to 40-second shifts. If the puck leaves the designated area, the coach immediately sends in a new puck.
Suggested Scoring: Goal: 1 point. Goal created directly from puck protection followed by a pass: 2 points
Key Points: Use puck protection to create time and space. Recognize when to continue protecting the puck and when to use a teammate. Get open and become available without the puck. Avoid protecting the puck without purpose: puck protection should lead to a next action.
Coach Steve's take
Protecting the puck doesn’t mean keeping it at all costs. It means buying yourself time to make the right choice. That is what this drill teaches, step by step: first the movement, then the read, then the decision. Don’t skip steps. If progression 2 doesn’t work, go back to 1. And when you see a player protecting with no purpose, ask him: “What are you looking for?”
