How it runs
This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.
Divide the group into 4. Set up 4 stations. 8 minutes per station.
- 1Quick start. Forward to cone. Pivot to backwards. Skate backwards to goal line. Complete stop. Repeat at cone 2 and cone 3. Variation: Players do the drill with a puck.
- 2Attack from the neutral zone. Start with a puck. Tight turn at the cone near the dots along the boards. Explode with puck. Skate around the second cone at the blue line. Coach acts as an obstacle. Player fakes and attacks the net. Shoot on net.
- 3Quick start. Player skates a 360 turn around the first three cones. At the fourth cone, tight turn. Accelerate along the boards.
- 4Attack from the dots. Explosive start with puck. Tight turn around the cone from inside out. Coach pressures the player to protect the puck. Tight turn around the second cone. Attack the net. Shoot on net.
Coach Steve's take
Four eight-minute stations make for a full 32 minutes. The trap is turning it into a soulless practice. Move from one station to the next, correct out loud and keep the energy up. If you have help, place an adult at each station to get more corrections in. Use this format when you want lots of reps in a short time. Players give everything, so plan water breaks.
