How it runs

This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.

Players line up on one side of the ice.

F1 controls the gap and forces F2, who starts at center, to the outside.

F2 tries to skate outside the blue line to exit the zone.

At the start, F2 cannot cross the imaginary line down the middle of the ice.

Once F1 makes contact, F2 can move anywhere on the ice.

F1 is the only player allowed to try to score.

F2 must protect the puck and exit the zone.

Alternate sides.

Coach Steve's take

The forecheck is about space before it is about contact. A player who charges in without a plan gets walked around. The one who controls the space forces the other to decide. Stress control before contact. Switch sides so everyone lives both roles. And praise the player who protects the puck well too: he is learning something valuable.
