How it runs
This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.
F1
- Mirror the play in front of the net if D1 goes behind the net.
- Get open as a passing option for D2.
- If not, explode to become an option for F3 for a direct or indirect pass.
- Watch for the chance to make a clean pass to F2 swinging through the middle.
- Same side: Pick up the puck along the wall.
- Carry the puck or pass to F3 or F2.
- Be ready for a possible tapback from F2.
F2
- Read the play and see the breakout coming from behind the net.
- Explode to the middle in the neutral zone (strong side).
- Get open for a pass.
- Same side: Stay close to the defenseman, back to the play, protecting the puck.
- Make a direct tapback pass to F1 or an indirect bank pass to F3.
F3
- Read the play and see the breakout coming from behind the net.
- Get open along the boards, as close as possible to the opposing defenseman.
- If possible, carry the puck and make a direct pass, tapback, or chip (center or boards) to F1 supporting.
- Same side: Collect the indirect pass along the boards.
D1
- Take the puck behind the net.
- Make a D-to-D pass.
- If partner isn’t available, wheel the net and take on D2 responsibilities.
- After passing, join the rush and become a middle lane passing option.
D2
- Read the play and get open behind the net as soon as D1 gets the puck.
- Start a stretch breakout to F3 or go up the middle if F1 is available.
Coach Steve's take
The breakout is where a team loses the most pucks, and it is rarely about talent. It is about reference points. When all five players know where to look before they even touch the puck, the breakout takes care of itself. Work on it at half-ice before going full situation: your players should be able to do it without thinking.
