How it runs
This is what your players need to understand before the puck moves.
D1
Walk the blue line, presenting a shooting threat and looking for passing options (F1, D2, or F2 along the goal line).
Draw an opposing player toward him as he moves. If the player does not challenge him, he can move closer and take a shot. By pulling the opposing forward toward him, either D2 or F1 will become open for a pass.
Can rotate/interchange positions with D2.
D2 and F1
Take control of the puck and move it to F2/F3. After drawing a defender toward them, return the puck to D1 while F2/F3 drives toward the net.
As D1 moves, D2/F1 slides into position at the top of the faceoff circle. Receives the puck from D1 and then passes it to F3 or F2 on the back door. Has the option to pass to D2/F1 immediately upon receiving a pass from D1.
Can also take one-timers. May slip into the slot as a back-door option.
F2 and F3
When D1 has the puck, remain in front of the goalie (about 1 to 1.5 stick lengths away). Keep your stick on the ice for a possible deflection if D1 takes a shot. Position yourself in front of the net on the strong side and exchange the puck with D2/F1.
After drawing a defender, F2/F3 takes a step toward the net, passes the puck to D2/F1, and then continues to the net either for a return pass or as a screen. Must be ready to jump on any loose pucks that miss the net on their side and quickly re-establish the formation.
Coach Steve's take
A power play doesn’t work because it is complicated. It works because every player knows where he is going. With the umbrella, the goal is to move the puck fast enough that a penalty killer lets go of his man. Take time to walk through the roles without pressure before going live. And don’t change formations every week: repetition is what makes it automatic.
